Extremely rare British fight poster promoting the closed-circuit television broadcast of the heavyweight title bout between champion Cassius Clay and Floyd Patterson held on November 22, 1965 at the Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. This poster is an incredible rarity. It is one of only two known examples from the fight, and it is especially significant to note that even though Cassius Clay had changed his name to Muhammad Ali in 1964, this poster continues to refer to him by his original birth name. The poster, which measures an impressive 40 x 29.75 inches, features large portrait images of both fighters and proclaims that “This will be the only live transmission of this contest” and that the fight can be viewed “On Larger Than Life Theatre Vision.” The venue for the airing of the bout, the Odeon Theatre, Leicester Square, London, appears along the base of the piece. This bout represented Ali’s first title defense following his rematch with Sonny Liston. Ali defeated Patterson by TKO in the twelfth round and he successfully defended his title seven times before being forced to retire due to legal troubles stemming from his refusal to be inducted into the United States military. The poster displays some minor surface creasing as well as a few tiny chips and tears (primarily in the upper left, easily matted out) along the white border. A small remnant of clear tape and a horizontal line of adhesive residue (atop the name and address of the theatre) are visible at the bottom of the poster. Good to Very Good condition. Despite the minor flaws, this poster displays beautifully. This is a true centerpiece, and one of the rarest and most striking of all Muhammad Ali fight posters.
